What is blue light and why is it a problem?

Blue light is part of the visible spectrum of light containing the shortest, highest-energy wavelengths. We are exposed to blue-light continually thanks to the widespread use of devices that reply on light-emitting diode (LED) technology. The problem is the human cornea and lens is unable to filter blue light sufficiently, allowing most of it to pass straight through to the back of the eye where it comes into contact with the sensitive retina whose cells are highly susceptible to damage from high-energy light.

What are carotenoid antioxidants?

Carotenoids are naturally occurring pigments made by certain plants, algae and bacteria giving them their colourful yellow, orange, red and purple hues. These pigments function as antioxidants, compounds that have the ability to support unstable molecules known as free radicals from creating oxidative damage. They also act as a blue-light filter, capable of absorbing high-energy visible light. Macular carotenoids, including lutein, zeaxanthin and meso-zeaxanthin, accumulate in the central retina and support the neurons that process visual information, thereby supporting visual acuity. Astaxanthin also supports retinal health by neutralising oxidative stress and reducing the effects of blue light, and like lutein and zeaxanthin must be consumed through the diet or supplement as the body cannot make these pigments.

Ingredients

Lutein (extracted from Marigold (Tagetes erecta) flower 12 mg, Meso-Zeaxanthin (extracted from Marigold (Tagetes erecta) flower 10 mg, Zeaxanthin (extracted from Marigold (Tagetes erecta) flower 2 mg, Astaxanthin (from Haematococcus pluvialis) algae 2 mg. Other ingredients: organic extra virgin olive oil, soft gel capsules (gelatin, glycerin, water, carob colour, natural lemon flavour), sunflower oil, beesax, safflower oil.

Does not contain: Gluten, milk derivatives, wheat, soy, artificial colours and flavours.

Suggested Use

Recommended intake:

Take one soft gel per day. Best taken with food as the phytonutrients in this supplement are fat-soluble, so consuming it with a meal containing fat can promote absorption.
