How does it work?
After consuming nitrate-rich beetroot juice, nitrate is absorbed into the bloodstream, taken up by the salivary glands, and bacteria in the mouth converts it into nitrite. Nitrite is then swallowed, absorbed into the bloodstream, and transported around the body to be converted to nitric oxide in the blood and organis, including muscle.
Nitric oxide is essential for several physiological processes that influence exercise performance. This includes vasodilation, which is the widening of the blood vessels, and muscle contractability, or an increase in the force of contraction. A key effect of dietary nitrate is that it reduces the oxygen demand of exercise. This means that muscles do not need as much oxygen to maintain a given work rate, thereby supporting exercise efficiency, fatigue resistance, and exercise performance.
