What is methyl-cobalamin Vitamin B12?
Vitamin B12 is the most chemically complex of all vitamins. The most basic unit of Vitamin B12 is cobalamin', a large molecule with an intricate cage-like structure that encloses a single cobalt atom. The cobalt atom is highly reactive on its own, but the cobalamin cage channels its reactivity to serve specific biochemical functions. As an enzyme co-factor, B12 usually has another chemical group attached to perform its function, which in the body is often a methyl group. Being naturally part of the chemistry of all our cells, the methyl-cobalamin B12 form is an essential nutrient for all cellular functions.
Why use methyl-cobalamin over other forms of B12?
From the earliest stages of vitamin B12 absorption from foods through to its utilisation at the cell level, a wide range of proteins must be produced by the stomach, small intestine and pancreas as well as within all body cells to ensure it can be effectively processed for use. Unfortunately, there are hundreds of inherited mutations that are known to affect any or all of these steps, resulting in the inability to properly convert cobalamin into a form that can be used by the body's cells. The active methyl' form of Doctor's Best fully-active B12 arrives in a form that the body can use immediately, bypassing the need for uptake and transport proteins. Research studies have identified more than 300 protein mutations that effect the uptake and use of B12, and common supplemental forms of cyano-cobalamin and hydroxo-cobalamin do not reliably support B12 uptake, unlike methyl-cobalamin. With the all-important methyl group pre-packaged' into its molecule structure, methyl-cobalamin is the most effective form of B12 for individuals with enzyme mutations compared to the hydroxo-cobalamin and cyano-cobalamin forms.
