What are activated B vitamins?
Vitamins exist in a range of different forms that are taken up and used by the body in different ways depending on the particular form it appears in. Active forms are those that can be utilised directly by the body without any additional biochemical processing required. This is important as there may be enzymatic mutations or deficiencies that impact the ability of the body to convert a non-active vitamin form into its activated form that can be used by cells. Why do we need B vitamins?
B vitamins play important roles in cellular metabolism, supporting DNA and enzyme functions, energy production and for supporting healthy bone, cardiovascular, nervous system and brain function. As the body cannot manufacture these essential nutrients for life, B vitamins must be obtained daily through the diet or supplementally. But B vitamins are also water-soluble and easily destroyed by light, heat, processing, freezing, canning and refining so not only are they difficult to find intact in foods, they are also easily excreted via the renal system so continual daily intake of relatively small amounts of B vitamins are required to replace those that are lost. Most chemical reactions that occur in the body require multiple members of the B-group family and cannot happen without them. A deficiency in any one B vitamin can impact on the functioning of the others. Just some of the primary functions of B vitamins include:
- Energy production - the tiny energy-producing regions of our cells called mitochondria, which generate over 90% of our life energy, require all 8 B vitamins to produce the energy needed by every cell.
- Utilisation of nutrients - B vitamins are needed for breaking down the macronutrients from our foods - carbohydrates, proteins and fatty acids, as well as for the utilisation and transport of oxygen, necessary nutrients to power cell function.
