Cabbage: an unsung hero
Gaia Herbs Sauerkraut Postbiotic celebrates the functional goodness of the humble green cabbage, with a formula designed to provide a digestive cleanse whilst supporting the health of the lower GI tract and immune function. Cabbage is a natural source of vitamin C, a necessary nutrient in supporting the production of white blood cells of the immune system. It’s also a potent antioxidant and cabbage is filled with antioxidant substances such as betacarotene, lutein and zeaxanthin, carotenoids that support vision and macular health. As a high fibre food, cabbage supports digestive power, bowel regularity and provides beneficial prebiotic fuel for the gut microbiome.
Fermented foods such as sauerkraut are a source of lactic acid producing bacteria that not only support the health and diversity of the gut microbiome, they also support effective nutrient absorption, breaking down compounds in foods that are hard to digest. Sauerkraut contains beneficial byproducts of fermentation such as short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) and vitamin K2. SCFAs provide an energy-source for the cells lining the large intestine (colonocytes), support metabolic function, blood sugar regulation and healthy cytokine balance.
What are postbiotics?
Postbiotics are beneficial substances naturally created by friendly bacteria (probiotics) following the consumption of undigested dietary fibres (prebiotics) like grains, legumes and vegetables. They are derived from probiotic or prebiotic-rich foods, such as cultured foods and foods rich in fibre, or as the result of probiotic supplementation. The process of breaking down fibres is one of fermentation which produces gases as well as beneficial ‘postbiotic’ compounds that contribute positive effects to human health.
There are many types of postbiotic substances such as:
- short-chain fatty acids (SCFA) - like butyrate that supports a healthy gut lining,
- vitamins and amino acids – like vitamin K, B vitamins and other metabolites that play a role in supporting intestinal, immune and various gut-organ/system axis functions,
- enzymes – that produce beneficial antioxidant compounds such as glutathione
- bacterial cell wall fragments – including bacterial lipoteichoic acid (LTA) that supports immune health, and
- bacterial lysates – derived from the mechanical or chemical degradation of bacteria found in the environment which may support the gut-lung axis.
Gaia Herbs postbiotic ferment extracts provide postbiotics in the form of inactivated bacterial cells and their metabolites that support a healthy immune response and maintain a healthy balanced microbiome.
How does it work?
Gaia Herbs Sauerkraut Postbiotic offers practical advantages over DIY home ferments which must be consumed within a short period and can be associated with unhealthy microbial colonisation that could compromise health. These advantages include a longer shelf-life, increased stability with a quality-controlled end-product, no need for refrigeration and consistent levels of beneficial compounds in every serve.
Developed based on traditional methods mixed with modern science, Gaia Herbs Sauerkraut Postbiotic superfood ferment is made using organic green cabbage, sea salt, and wild-type lactic acid bacteria from spontaneous fermentation. The formulation does not contain live bacteria so it is full shelf-stable. Every 2 capsule serve delivers the equivalent of two tablespoons of traditionally fermented sauerkraut.
