What makes Quatrefolic® folate different?
Vitamin B9, otherwise known as folate, is an essential vitamin for human reproduction, growth and development. But most forms of this essential vitamin – whether it be the naturally occurring folate in foods, or the synthetic folic acid found in fortified foods and supplements – are not biologically active and require conversion in multiple step enzymatic and chemical pathways to become the biologically active form the body can actually use for health.
One of the key enzymes in the conversion of inactive folate or folic acid to its activated form is the enzyme called methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase, otherwise known as MTHFR. Unfortunately, many individuals today experience genetic differences that reduce their ability to produce adequate or effectively functioning MTHFR which means they are unable to effectively convert non-activated forms of vitamin B9. Patented Quatrefolic® solves this problem by providing the end-step activated form of folate known as 5-MTHF (5-methyltetrahydrofolate), the biologically active form that the body can readily use at the cellular level without any further chemical conversion. This makes Quatrefolic® the most efficient form of vitamin B9 available for health.
Why do we need biologically active folate?
Folate is needed for hundreds of critical and life-sustaining metabolic processes and as we can’t make it in the body, it must be obtained daily through dietary intake. Folate is essential for making DNA and regulating gene activity, making it an essential component of pre-conception care to support healthy foetal development. It also supports the recycling of the metabolite homocysteine into methionine thereby supporting heart health. Production of the hormone melatonin (regulating sleep patterns) as well as brain neurotransmitters serotonin (known as the ‘happy hormone’), dopamine (supporting motivation and reward pathways) and noradrenaline (needed for attention, cognitive function and as part of the stress response) all depend on adequate active folate.
