What is pH?

The pH scale is a way of measuring how acidic or alkaline something is, from 0 (most acidic) at one end to 14 (most alkaline) at the other, with 7 sitting neutrally in the middle. It's the same scale used in chemistry labs, aquariums and swimming pools - and it can also be applied to samples from the human body. The body contains a range of different pH environments naturally for normal health. Here’s a quick tour:

  • the skin has a naturally acidic layer called the ‘acid mantle’ sitting between pH 4.5-5.5 which supports its natural barrier function.
  • the saliva typically sits between pH 6.2 – 7.6 slightly acidic to neutral but is heavily influenced by what has recently been eaten. Acidic substances are corrosive to tooth enamel, while alkaline substances (such as calcium from dairy and other foods) helps to protect tooth enamel.
  • the stomach is well-known as the most acidic environment of the body, producing gastric acid and typically sits at a pH of around 1.5-3.5 to help breakdown foods and deal with unwanted pathogens potentially ingested with food.
  • the small intestines flip the switch and become more alkaline with a pH of 7.5-8.5 needed for the next stage of digestion and, importantly, where nutrient absorption takes place.
  • the blood is the most tightly regulated of all pH environments in the body held closely just-off neutral in the 7.35-7.45 pH range no matter what we eat or drink. The lungs and kidney are extremely adept, working around the clock to keep pH in this narrow, safe range to ensure the body’s enzymes system can function normally.
  • the urine is the most variable of all pH environments, ranging anywhere from pH 4.5 to 8 depending on all sorts of everyday factors.
Why measure urinary pH?

Urinary pH is a bit like a receipt for your day. Because your kidneys are one of the main systems keeping your blood pH within its tight range, they adjust what they excrete based on what's coming in - food, drink, hydration, exercise, sleep, even stress. If you've eaten a lot of citrus, greens or vegetables, your urine tends to lean more alkaline. Meat, dairy, coffee and processed foods tend to nudge it more acidic. Hydration levels, workouts and hormonal fluctuations all play a part too.

That's why urinary pH is more useful as a trend-tracker than a single snapshot in time - one reading tells you very little on its own, but patterns over time can offer a fun window into how your everyday habits are showing up. Some people use it as a gentle prompt to eat more vegetables, drink more water, or check in on how their body's responding to a new routine.

How to use pH-Strips

Using the strips is simple and easy:

  • Tear off a strip of litmus test paper about 2.5 – 4cm from the roll
  • Hold the strip in your urine stream, or dip briefly in a fresh sample
  • Wait a second or two for the strip to change colour
  • Compare the strip to the colour chart to find your reading

A typical urinary pH sits somewhere between 6.5 and 7. It's worth noting that urinary pH naturally fluctuates throughout the day based on what you've eaten, drunk and how hydrated you are, so a single reading is just a snapshot in time. Some users like to test at consistent times throughout the day (first thing in the morning is popular) to track trends over time rather than one-off numbers.

Who might enjoy using pH-Strips?
  • Wellness enthusiasts who love to track health markers at home
  • People experimenting with dietary changes and curious about the effects
  • Anyone who's part of a wellness programme that includes pH tracking
  • The pleasantly curious - sometimes it's just fun to know your numbers!
Ingredients

Each pack contains a 4.5m single-roll dispenser of pH testing paper strips (approximately 120 tests) plus a colour-comparison chart. Colour chart range: 5.5 to 8.0.

Suggested Use
Recommended intake:
  • Tear off 2.5 to 4 cm of paper from the roll.
  • Hold in your urine stream, or dip briefly in a fresh sample (Enzymedica notes urine gives more accurate results than saliva).
  • Results appear immediately once wet.
  • Compare the colour to the closest match on the chart.
  • Test at a consistent time of day for the most useful insights.

Recommended care:
Store in a cool, dry place. Keep the dispenser closed when not in use - moisture and humidity can affect the paper's accuracy. Don't submerge the roll in water. Strips are single-use.

Cautions
  • If pregnant, nursing or taking medications, consult a healthcare practitioner prior to use.
  • Keep closed in dry place; avoid excessive heat.
  • Do not use if safety seal is broken or missing.
  • Keep out of reach of children.
  • Always read the label and use as directed. If symptoms persist see your healthcare practitioner.

Enzymes are the energy of life

Enzymes are needed for every chemical reaction that takes place in the human body. Every single one of us produces two types of enzymes - digestive and metabolic. Digestive enzymes are the heroes of digestion - they let you enjoy the foods that you love and get the most out of their nutrients; a lack of these enzymes can lead to food intolerance and digestive discomfort. On the other hand, metabolic enzymes catalyse and regulate every single biochemical function in the body. Each Enzymedica product is specifically formulated to provide targeted support for common digestive discomforts, food intolerances, cardiovascular health, proper immune function or healthy cytokine responses to help you find balance and be at your best.

Sometimes, your body doesn’t create enough enzymes to digest the foods you eat. Digestive enzymes can support healthier digestion and gut-related immune health. Try our award-winning enzymes to help you enjoy the foods you love!
Food sensitivities and intolerances are common and foods containing gluten, casein, dairy lactose, and phenols are frequent triggers. Food intolerances don’t have to leave you worrying with every bite. Feel the freedom of proper digestion!
Enzymes are the “energy of life.” Every organ, tissue, and cell in our body depends on the reactions of metabolic enzymes and their energy factor. Find the enzymes that are right for you and feel the Thera-blend™ difference.
